We object for all the following important and critical reasons:
1 -Lack of current Infrastructure for the area. It is already heavily congested with traffic.
2- Destruction of green space currently in use for the health and exercise of taxpayers.
3- Wildlife. Numerous and rare species should be protected.
4 - Historical. The land was gifted to the MOD. The council should return it back to public use, and NOT for profit.
5 - Personal reasons. Middlewick was the reason we moved here 35 years. If housing is built, we will move out of Colchester.
In the event the land is sold off by the MOD, ALL (ie 100%) should be given over to provide a country and nature park.

THE AREA IS TOTALLY UNSUITABLE FOR MORE HOUSING 1/ there is wildlife in the area in need of the habitat 2/the roads are already clogged, the hythe gets flooded at high tide causing chaos in the area, disrupting both residents and businesses, we simply dont have the infrastructure to support more cars and lorries in an already congested area.
the plans need to be scrapped full stop and leave it as it already is.

This inclusion should be rejected due to:
1. A late addition offering little chance for surveys and consultation
2. Rare species such as skylarks on site
3. Highways - a lack of work on where the traffic will go
4. Biodiversity net gain is not achievable when building over vast areas of the land
5. The loss of the natural barrier between 2 communities
If any development is to take place it should be limited to the area that is currently fenced off. We should not include the whole site in the map, which allows a developer to build over all of it.
Areas outside the fenced area need to be protected.
There are several issues with this land of why it should not be included:
1. It was a late addition to the plan offering no real chance for the council to prepare surveys or consultation to occur.
2. Skylarks on site - CBC say they are endangered on Gosbecks but ignore them on Middlewick. This completely contradicts our own policy on the matter.
3. Highways - while the immediate junctions have been considered, the impact of traffic down Mersea Road has not been factored in as all traffic will be heading north with south only being an island.
4. Bio-diversity - the report asks for a 10% bio diversity gain. This is impossible when removing vast areas of natural habitat
5. Rare habitats - There are several rare species on site.
6. Mental and physical benefits that the Wick offers.
7. A barrier between 2 different communities.
8. A lack of amenities like this in the area already.
6.

The site is an invaluable and irreplaceable area of rare biodiversity. No planning application and housing development would be capable of protecting it, regardless how many full ecological assessments and mitigation measures are taking place.
The Middlewick Ranges should become a protected area. Will Quince has recently requested that the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs explore the possibility of recognising it as a protected site due to its rare acid grassland. This is a step in the right direction. No housing development on this land should be considered.

It makes no logical sense to build any number of houses in an area which is already strained by the current road infrastructure and will serve to cause further climate issues by taking away a beautifully historic grass and woodland area.

LOSS of:
open space, carbon reducing area, mental health, recreational space
many endangered and rare species, flora, acid grassland, skylark nesting area, nightingale habitat, badgers and peace.
When it is destroyed, it is gone forever.
LACK of:
infrastructure,
services, hospital and GP capacity, schools, jobs
roads -traffic congestion terrible pollution,
sewerage system already can't cope discharging raw sewerage into the river Colne.
COST to:
the economy, NHS, air quality
Research by Ordinance Survey and The Sunday Times concluded that Colchester is in the bottom 10% in the UK for access to open space. Fewer areas than London residents have.
Move it somewhere else.

This is a wonderful, natural grassland, full of nature, flora and fauna. It is a unique place, like no other in Colchester, and is an immensely loved place by people in this area, and beyond. It should be made into a country park for all to enjoy.
It shouldn't be built on, full stop. Colchester has so many new estates in the last decade or so, and we also have a 9k garden village being built a mile or so from this area. Surely that is enough? The infrastructure in the area is creaking as it is, it's just not sustainable.

Colchester has already built on so much green land. This area should be preserved. It's a very populated area and needs somewhere for the residents and wildlife to enjoy.
You wouldn't do this on Hilly Fields Lexden but it's okay near a large Council Estate it all seems very elitist to me.
Some places are worth fighting for and I think this is one of them Colchester Council should protect this area for generations to come.
Don't build here.

Colchester is already becoming overcrowded with the constant building of homes, we have very limited green space and cannot afford to lose an area like the Wick which is full of wildlife, trees etc.
1000 homes would cause absolute chaos to the surrounding area with traffic etc. Also there isn’t the infrastructure to cope with another 1000 homes, not enough schools/GP’s etc
There should be no homes built on this land!
It should be turned into a country park with a car park, cycling etc

This area is so well loved be the community. We're are lucking in Colchester to have so many green spaces. If we lose middlewick, whats to say we'll lose gosbecks, hilly fields, salary brook ect next. We need to preserve these spaces. There are so many empty buildings in Colchester that could be developed into housing.
This area could be turned into a beautiful green space like highwoods park.
Work on making the area suitable. Protect the wildlife. Build a visitor centre and run events.

You cannot mitigate against such a loss of such a large wildlife area. You cannot move badger setts or replace habitat for lizards by planting trees. Moreover we are in both a climate and an ecological emergency and that means changing what we do not engaging in partial and limited ‘mitigation’ exercises while carrying on destroying wildlife habitats with overdevelopment.
Take Middlewick Ranges out of the Local Plan completely.

The loss of habitat, it's capability to provide flood run off, the well-being that it brings the residents of the area would be a great loss. In addition the local infrastructure will not cope with more polluting motor vehicles in the area.
The loss of habitat, the capability of the land as local flood protection and the damage to the well being of the local residents of old heath, black heath and monkwick make these housing plans damaging to the environment. The Middlewick Ranges should never have been included in the local plan. Required housing allocation is already fulfilled, infrastructure including sewerage is insufficient for new homes and most importantly this is an area of undisturbed natural beauty with huge environmental significance for flora and fauna that cannot be easily moved or replicated. The government always talks of sustaining important environmental spaces, we must act accordingly and preserve not destroy. This isnt any green field, this is a highly unusual and complex, biodiverse oasis.
The local plan should entirely discount and remove the middlewick ranges for any housing or builds. It should be designated an area of environmental importance, natural beauty and Country Park, allowed to be managed to balance passive human recreation and enhance current biodiversity.

Colchester is already bursting at the seams. The constant building of homes without the relevant infrastructure to support them makes poor sense. Colchester's roads are in poor condition and another 1000+ cars a day going up and down Mersea and Old Heath roads will do the area and the environment no good at all. Most importantly this is vital green space which is incredibly important for current residents mental and physical well being. Frankly Colchester is crowded enough as it is.
The green space should be left as it is, there's far too much building going on already, the roads are clogged up enough already. Schools, NHS, Social Services, Police, local government services are all struggling unbearably without making Colchester any busier.

The land is supporting the mental health wellbeing of all of those that currently use it for walks and getting close to nature, it should not be built on when there are so many brownfield sites available for development.once it has gone it's gone for ever. The roads around this area already suffer from regular snarl ups and cannot cope with greater traffic, there is not enough infrastructure to support this development. Those elected to power are once again not listening to the wants and needs of the community.
The plans to develop should be withdrawn.
