Colchester City Council Preferred Options Local Plan Regulation 18 Consultation 2025
Policy PP29: Land East of School Road, Copford
Representation ID: 11575
Received: 21/12/2025
Respondent: Pits Wood Trust
I am writing as Chair of Pits Wood Trust to object to the proposed housing development adjacent to Pits Wood, a valued community woodland with well-documented habitats for protected species, including nightingales and badgers. Nightingales are Schedule 1 protected and a Red List species, reliant on the woodland’s dense, low-disturbance scrub; nearby development would cause harmful noise, lighting, and fragmentation. Badgers, protected under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992, have established setts along the eastern boundary, risking unlawful disturbance. Pits Wood also functions as an ecological buffer and green corridor. The scheme would overwhelm village and conflicts with planning policy.
